How to Make Sure Your Social Media is Job Search Ready

March 7, 2019
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

Social media can be an asset in your job search.  It can help you network with potential co-workers and research employers.  But job seekers are not the only people spending time on social. According to a 2018 CareerBuilder survey, 70 percent of employers use social media to research potential employees.  In addition, 57 percent of employers found content that caused them not to hire a candidate.  How do your social profiles look?

If you are job hunting, your first stop is to make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date.  List all your positions and a few key responsibilities or successes you had while in those roles.   According to LinkedIn, profiles with photos get 21x more views.  If you chose to include a photo, your photo should be a headshot with eye contact and a smile.  Avoid having items like sunglasses or other people in your pic.

Next up on LinkedIn, go to the upper right-hand corner and select Edit URL. Personalize your URL to be your name, removing the additional characters that is assigned to you. For example, a LinkedIn URL of www.linkedin.com/in/john-smith will make it easier for employers to find you.  While you are at it, make sure your settings reflect that you are open to opportunities and recruiters contacting you.  To do this, go to Account – Settings & Privacy and scroll down to “Job Seeking Preferences”.

For social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, in general it is a good idea to think before you post.  For Facebook, since chances are you might have had your account for a while, check your settings of who can see what posts from both the past and present.  Facebook has a handy guide with simple steps to follow to limit past posts.  You can also turn off search engine indexing in your privacy settings, which helps prevent old posts from resurfacing.

For Twitter and Instagram, if you think some content may not appeal to all employers, you can make your account private.  By doing this, you will have to approve all new followers on your accounts. Your current followers would not be impacted by that switch on either platform.

On any platform, if you think there are any potential red flags, you could clean your social media by deleting the post from any or all platforms.  Types of posts to be aware of include:

  • Negative posts about co-workers or employers
  • Photos showing you partying it up from the weekend
  • Posts with significantly bad grammar
  • See what Business News Daily says to avoid on your profile here.

Overall, your social media profiles are your online reputation and it is your choice how to handle them. And depending on what type of position you are interested in, being active on social media might help you land the job.  But with three-fourths of employers checking online profiles, you want to put your best foot forward – in person and online!

How Staffing is Similar to Dating

February is the month we celebrate love and we love helping people find a job.  Daily our superstar recruiters play matchmaker to match candidates with jobs.  Often the first step is to talk with candidates to find out their interests much like you would chat with someone on your first date.  Then potential employees are “set-up” with our clients, just like you’d “set-up” two single friends on a date. So how else is staffing similar to dating?

Online is all the rage. Many singles use online apps to find that special someone just like we advertise on job boards like LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter to find special candidates.  See which jobs would make you swipe right on our job board.

Face-to-face is key.  One of the hallmarks of our recruiting process is meeting our candidates face-to-face.  This is so helpful when talking to our clients. Even if it is someone you have been talking to for weeks or even months, you still would want to meet face-to-face to continue your relationship.

Finding your type. When on the dating scene, you might go out with one person for bit, and then switch and start seeing someone new.  Working at a temporary position allows you to try out a position before fully committing to the relationship – or job.

Timing is everything.  Sometimes candidates need to wait or go on a few different interviews before finding the right job. Just like dating where you might have to wait until the right person comes along.

What everyBODY is saying.  Body language plays an important role in the hiring process.  According to study conducted by Career Builder hiring managers know within the first five minutes if candidate is a good fit – just like love at first sight.

Breaking up is hard to do.  Sometimes relationships and jobs just don’t work out.  And that’s ok.  The beauty of working with a staffing company is if you let us know with notice, we’ll work on finding you your next sweet gig.  Just like you’d lean on a friend after a breakup with your sweetheart, That’s Good HR will be there for you!

Do you need a Staffing Firm? Don’t take our word for it…

Why do businesses use temporary employees?  According to the American Staffing Association, flexibility, speed, and access to talent are the top benefits to working with a staffing agency like That’s Good HR.  Companies across the nation use staffing firms and it shows considering staffing employment hit an 11-year high in this month (January 2019).

It’s a candidate-driven market right now and many employers are finding it increasingly harder to find qualified candidates to fill open positions. As the BOSS Group’s blog points out, staffing agencies are the experts in finding qualified candidates.  You know what – we agree! That’s Good HR employs a multi-targeted, multi-channel approach in order to continuously reach qualified candidates.

BOSS Group is not the only resource that thinks using a staffing firm is a good idea.  The popular job board ZipRecruiter states that having the right staff is critical to a business’ success. Hiring a temporary employee gives a company the advantage of being able to “try before you buy”.  You can bring an employee onto your team and make sure they are a good fit before committing to them in for the long run.

Team People also recommends “test-driving” an employee before hiring.  They also point out that staffing companies have more resources to find high-level talent than most hiring managers do, which saves managers time and money.  Who doesn’t need that?

Top Holiday Gifts

January 7, 2019
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

The new year is in full swing and the holidays are behind us (December 25 is only 362 days away!), so it’s the perfect time for the TGHR team to reflect on what gifts they recently received.  Just like Oprah, here’s our list of TGHR’s favorite things!

Home Sweet Home: Many of the gifts our staffing specialists received were home related.  Rockstar recruiter Ashley wins this category since she closed on a new home just a few days before Christmas. As a housewarming present Ashley got a shiny new Dyson vacuum. A whole house is tough to beat, but staffing superstar Maddie is in love with her new Ring doorbell.

What’s for Dinner?: Payroll guru Kirstia, and accounting extraordinaire Meaghan, both found air fryers under their tree. We are already excited for the next TGHR pitch-in!

Hi-tech Holiday: Maddie also found Beats Wireless Headphones from Santa and marketing ninja Susie is obsessed with her new Apple watch.  TGHR veteran VP Tiffany’s phone is going to be squeaky clean thanks to the new phone soap she received (and yes, her mom purchased it on QVC).

Fashion Finds: Staffing star Staci is toting around a new plum suede purse, while our staffing wizard Lana is sporting leather earrings that the whole office is loving.

Four-legged Friends: In the running for the BEST gift received is award-winning CFO Greta’s newest toy – the Furbo. Named the #1 gift for dogs by Ellen Degeneres and J.Lo, this ingenious invention lets you see, talk and dispense treats to your dog when you are not home! Riggs, Greta’s dog, might have been watched by the whole TGHR team and given a few to many treats after our weekly staff meeting! (To see all our pets, head over to Facebook!)

So, what was the best gift received by the TGHR team? Our awesome co-owner Mary noted that she was thrilled to find cash in her stocking, but the best gift for us is working with our candidates and clients. And the best part?  We receive that gift every day, we don’t even need to wait until next Christmas!

TGHR Thanksgiving Traditions

November 19, 2018
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

Thanksgiving means traditions! Approximately, 88% of Americans eat turkey as part of their Thanksgiving dinner, amounting to 46 million turkeys eaten in the US on Thanksgiving.  Here are some favorite traditions from our TGHR family.

Our VP, Client Partnerships Tiffany enjoys sweet potato casserole every year, but she puts brown sugar on top – not marshmallows.  She pairs that up with broccoli casserole and pumpkin cheesecake for the perfect family feast. After eating, it’s time to strategize for Black Friday deals!

You’ll find Account Manager Amber enjoying these apple dumplings on the big day.  There’s a surprise secret ingredient that you’ll never guess.  You can take the girl out of Kentucky but can’t take Kentucky out of the girl!

It’s no surprise that the always active Staffing Specialist, Kate starts her Thanksgiving by running the Drumstick Dash in Broad Ripple with her family and friends.  After the race, she enjoys a mimosa brunch before hosting Thanksgiving dinner.

Greta, our CFO and Co-Owner, is starting a new tradition this year by running the ZGravy Chase in Zionsville with her family.  To keep the healthy vibes going, here’s one of her favorite side dishes to bring to the table to compliment the turkey.  To make this oh-so-pretty Thanksgiving salad, use kitchen shears to cut 1 ½ bags of spring mix salad.  Then dice one orange pepper and one yellow pepper into bite sized chunks.  Roast one cup of pine nuts for two to three minutes (don’t forget to salt the nuts right before placing them in the oven). Grab a glass salad bowl and layer the salad in the following order: Spring mix, peppers, goat cheese, pine nuts. Repeat this pattern until you bowl is full!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Staffing Specialist Staci is starting a new tradition.  She will be baking and decorating cookies with the women in her family.  Everyone will bring their recipe and container to take home a sample of everyone’s goodies.  The day includes a fun festival cocktail as well!

We at That’s Good HR hope you day is filled with traditions both new and old!  Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

Attitude of Gratitude

November 7, 2018
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

November is upon us, which means Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  A customary practice around the turkey table is to say what you are thankful for, but what happens if this was extended to a year-round practice?  Practicing gratitude can make you a happier person this month and beyond.

Fifty-two percent of women and 44 percent of men express gratitude on a regular basis according to an infographic on The Muse.  People who are grateful tend to be more satisfied and have more self-control – which could be key as holiday treats start to roll into the office this time of year.

Speaking of the office, according to a study done by Harvard Medical School, managers who remember to say “thanks” may find that employees feel motivated to work harder.  It has also been shown that gratitude is more motivating than money.  Gratitude is contagious, so practicing gratitude at work will help create a corporate culture of thanks.

Thanks can be given in a multitude of ways.  You can stop by a coworker’s desk and say thanks for help on a project or send a friendly email. If you want to go old school, drop a handwritten note on someone’s desk.

To become more grateful yourself, keep a gratitude journal starting now.  Write down three things every night that you were thankful for during the day.  The key to this practice is two things: be specific and keep writing for more than 5 days. When journaling, do not just say “I’m thankful for my family or my job”, get down to the nitty-gritty and cite specific people or things that you appreciated that day.

If writing is not your thing, try a gratitude meditation.  Never meditated before?  Not to worry, take 10 minutes and try this guided gratitude meditation.  It will lead you through every step of the way.

Need more ideas on how you can become more grateful at work or home?  Here’s 10 ways to become more grateful. We are grateful for our clients and candidates not just this season but all year long!

Spooky Staffing Stories

Job searching can be scary! Don’t let working with a staffing agency spook you – our recruiters find quality candidates for our clients every day.  But there are a few things to steer clear of, just like you’d avoid that creepy clown in the haunted house.

  1. Don’t ghost! Research shows that people are “ghosting” more than ever due to the tight labor market. Not showing up for an interview or work is one of the worst things you can do. This action can damage your reputation and have repercussions longer than just that one day.  Make sure to stay in contact with your recruiter who will help you avoid this ghastly mistake.
  2. Don’t fear a temporary assignment. You may be coming from full-time employment and taking a new assignment that is labeled as “temporary” might sound frightful. Have no fear – many of our temporary assignments turn into a temp-to-hire situation. Plus, a temporary assignment might be just what you need to make sure the company and culture is the right fit for you and you do not dread going to work.
  3. Don’t create an eerie silence. Once you have met with one of our staffing specialists, make sure you are available via phone and email. New opportunities come in daily from clients and in such a hair-raising labor market, time is of the essence.

See what positions are available here and dust the cobwebs off your resume and apply today!

Candidate Profile: Liz Noel

October 8, 2018
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

When the company Liz Noel worked for ceased operations back in 2013, she was immediately thrust into the job market seeking new employment.  Her previous experience included a multitude of administrative and office management skills and her positions had all been in the marketing arena including a production house and advertising agency. Thinking a staffing agency may be beneficial to her search, Liz checked out online reviews of multiple agencies. She liked what others had to say about That’s Good HR and decided to throw her hat into the ring by sending her resume to the office.

Her resume was received and reviewed by Lindsey Curtis, who Liz now refers to as her “go-to-gal”. Liz’s first assignment was in a new industry for her – an engineering firm.  Liz describes herself as a “lifelong learner” so she was excited and energized about the new industry.

After completing her temporary assignment downtown covering part of a maternity leave, Liz had the opportunity to move to the north side and take on a long-term assignment.  As she is a naturally curious person who enjoys talking with others, she decided to take the time and get to know several people in various departments at her new company, realizing everyone had something different to teach her. In addition, even though she was a temporary employee she was given the opportunity to participate in many company-provided training sessions, and she took advantage of these classes to increase her knowledge and advance her career skills.

Temporary assignments were appealing to Liz as it gave her a chance to learn so much every day, meet new people and be introduced to so many interesting industries.  She now works at a local startup company, where she began as a temporary employee.  At the beginning of the assignment, not only was she a temporary employee, but the person she reported to daily happened to also be a temporary employee.  As the company grew, she has had the rare opportunity to work on multiple sides of the business, ranging from finance to marketing to technical support, before landing her current permanent role.

Liz loves meeting new people and clearly does not mind a challenge.  Working with That’s Good HR has surpassed her expectations and she’s thrilled that she had Lindsey to shepherd her through every step of her journey.  Liz thinks working on contract is a two-way street and the perfect way to ensure that you are good fit at the company, and that the company is a good fit for you too.

Her advice for new temporary employees is to keep an open mind, as you never know where a temporary assignment might lead. Liz is living proof of that!

What is the #1 Benefit for Job Seekers?

Unemployment has continued to be at an all-time low, which means the labor market is tight.  Finding qualified candidates can be a challenge.  It’s a simple case of supply and demand, less people looking for work means quality candidates have more options. There is one key benefit that top employees look for when considering a new opportunity.  Good news – it’s a benefit offered by That’s Good HR so you don’t have to worry about providing it to temporary or contract employees.

According to a recent study conducted by Essential Staff Care (ESC), availability of affordable, usable health benefits is a core indicator of employee interest in a position, attitude and longevity on the job.  In addition, 87% of temporary employees say medical benefits are their most desired perk when job searching.  Employees enrolled in the healthcare insurance plan that we offer are also more likely to stay on the job almost 4 weeks longer than those who do not have this valuable option.

More than half of Americans hold less than $1,000 in savings, meaning that one illness or injury could result in significant financial hardship. Having the option to enroll in TGHR’s health insurance option helps alleviate financial stress and gives temporary employees an affordable healthcare option, with no added expense to our client companies.

Another benefit to our candidates? The plan rates – which are paid weekly – have remained unchanged since 2010.  This is just one way we can show we are committed to our candidates and prove that we want to attract the highest caliber employees for our clients.

From Candidate to Client

September 20, 2018

When Erin McLennan was about to graduate college, she wasn’t sure where she would land a job. She was no stranger to working, since she had been employed at a local hospital while balancing her studies. Erin majored in Psychology but was unsure if she wanted to head to graduate school or seek full time employment upon graduation.

Some of her friends from the hospital had used That’s Good HR (TGHR) to find a job, so Erin decided to reach out to a recruiter at our office. She made an interview appointment and met staffing manager Kate Stephens.  Shortly after interviewing with TGHR, Erin was offered a position at an innovative company in Carmel as a lending associate on a temporary basis.  After a few short months, her role converted to a permanent position and six months after that, based on her performance, she was made a supervisor.

After just two years at the company, Erin had gone from being a TGHR candidate to a TGHR client responsible for her own team. She was confident in the quality of TGHR temporary employees and knew it would make hiring employees a breeze.

Erin is now a product manager in the technology field working with software engineers.  She credits TGHR for finding a career field that she is not only passionate about, but also excelling in.  Erin never would have guessed she would be in the technology field after college. She is thankful she found a position where she can use her knowledge and creativity at the same time.

Erin’s favorite thing about working with TGHR could be credited to her psychology background.  She loved having someone to go to as a mentor to counsel her through her job seeking journey. Erin felt supported by Kate right after college and found it helpful to know she had someone in her corner.

As a client, Erin appreciated TGHR’s high-level of customer service.  When Erin was busy supervising 20 people, she was grateful that there was always a live person picking up the phone at TGHR if she had an issue or needed additional employees.  When hiring, Erin looks for someone with a good personality and willingness to learn, just the type of candidates TGHR likes to work with – a perfect fit!

When she’s not working, Erin enjoys the outdoors with her black lab, Charlie, and is keeping busy planning her upcoming wedding. Wedding details can be stressful, but hiring decisions are not thanks to That’s Good HR!
