Indy Job Market

Indianapolis has a job market that has been growing in recent years, with projections to continue growing. And That’s Good HR is here to help with your job search, whether you’re looking for an entry-level position or a new career after years of experience. We’ve lived and played in the Hoosier capital for more than 20 years, so we’re on the side of job seekers like you navigating the Indy job market right now!

1. Indy has seen job growth in recent years

Indy has seen a lot of job growth over the last several years, especially in the industries of tourism, technology and healthcare. At That’s Good HR, we primarily focus on placements for healthcare, administrative, customer service, HR and accounting. And we offer job seekers options in their assignments, like temp, temp-to-hire and direct hire placements, with benefits and insurance offered by us too.

2. Indy is popular for new grads

Indianapolis has a number of local colleges and universities, and the city is popular for new graduates from all over. With walkable areas like downtown and Broad Ripple and a growing job market for all experience levels, young people continue to flock to Indy. That’s Good HR has helped many new grads discover the right career for them, by offering exploration in a variety of different fields and positions.

Said one former candidate Jessica Jordan, “With That’s Good HR, I have worked in Healthcare, IT, Retail, and Construction. The companies I worked with were great, and I really enjoyed my coworkers. My happiness with an opportunity was equally important to TGHR as the employer’s happiness.”

3. Indy outperforms other areas in the state

At the end of 2020, it was estimated by the Indiana Business Review that job output in the Indy, Carmel and Anderson area would “likely be up between 3% and 4% during 2021, and employment will grow by about 70,000 jobs.” The Indy job market has outperformed other areas in the state for many years, and continues to do so even despite the pandemic, with a number of open positions consistently available on our TGHR job board

4. Indy’s labor market is strong nationally

In a spring report from The Wall Street Journal, Indy had the fourth-strongest labor market among large metropolitan areas in the U.S. And in an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Indy Chamber Chief Executive Officer Michael Huber praised the variety of fields as a major attraction for job seekers: “Indianapolis has got a growing tech sector. Indianapolis has got a growing life sciences [and] advanced manufacturing sector and a lot of people, particularly young people, I think are reevaluating their life choices and asking, ‘Is it worth it to incur the expense to be in a New York or to be in a San Francisco?'”

5. Indy’s cost of living is low

Incurring the expense of a larger city is a big reason to choose Indianapolis instead. Our city was ranked #12 in the Cheapest Places to Live in the U.S. News & World Report, and our cost of living is 2% below the national average according to Forbes. When you start to establish a career in Indianapolis, you can afford more for not just yourself, but for your family (or future family) as well.

6. Indy’s unemployment rate is lower than average

Also according to the U.S. News & World Report, the national average unemployment rate in 2020 was 8.1%, but here in Indy, that number was just 6.6%. This low unemployment rate helps contribute to our high overall rankings in not just the category of “Best Places to Live” but “Best Places to Retire” as well.
