20 Years of Staffing Stories: Mary Springer

Susie McKenna
February 20, 2020
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

If you had asked Mary Springer in college if she wanted to own her own business, she would have told you no. At the time, she was preparing herself to climb the corporate ladder, most likely in the area of finance. Upon reflection, she has always been metrics-driven and self-motivated, which are two vital skills for any business owner.

Upon graduation from Purdue University, armed with a degree in financial planning, she moved to Ft. Wayne to start a management training program to become director of finance for an educational institution.  While she enjoyed the management aspect of the job, Mary was eager to move back to Indianapolis. Moving back without a job would be tough, so she found a new job in a way that many people get a job – through networking.  A college friend had recently talked to a national staffing firm with a local presence in Indy and thought the job sounded like a good fit for Mary, not him.  He was right and Mary worked at that staffing firm for six years and then was recruited to open the temporary staffing division at a new, locally based staffing firm that was just starting out – That’s Good HR.

There are some aspects of the staffing business that have remained the same since 2000, but many have changed.  In 2000, there was an online job board – Monster.com, while today there are plenty to choose from like Indeed, Zip Recruiter, LinkedIn, Career Builder and more. The online job boards have provided access to more people, but everyone has that access. Mary recruited at college fairs in her early days, a practice that is still done today.  And the number one thing that has stayed the same through the years is the fact that staffing is about connecting the right person with the right job at the right time.

Social media has also changed the landscape of staffing.  As Mary points out, back in the day when you put an ad in the paper, the people responding didn’t have a LinkedIn profile that was readily available – not to mention that they were still reading a printed newspaper regularly. Online job boards and social media sites like Facebook have changed how we talk to people.  In fact, That’s Good HR has only been on Facebook for the past decade! In today’s fast-paced world with technology at your fingertips, Mary remarked that finding that personal connection is harder, but she’s up for the challenge.

The biggest challenge in the past 20 years was the recession of 2008, as it was for many businesses.  In theory, the staffing industry is “recession-proof” since when the market goes down, many companies hire contractors and there are more people looking for work, which is good news for staffing firms. But the recession of 2008 was different and forced more than 170,000 small businesses to close during the first two years of the recession. That’s Good HR was forced to reduce staff and do more with less resources but was able to not only survive but thrive amid a dismal economy.

As That’s Good HR continues to reinvent itself to meet the changing needs of the local landscape, Mary looks forward to what the next 20 years will bring.  And the end of the day she is most proud of building a place where people want to come to work and help people find jobs to achieve their goals every day.  Cheers to 20 years!

Do you have a story about how That’s Good HR has impacted you in the past 20 years? Let us know as we are sharing staffing stories all year long as part of our 20th Anniversary Celebration!

Fun and Festive Drinks from TGHR

We conduct very important research in our office. Of course, we track our staffing stats weekly, but in preparation for New Year’s Eve we have been trying a new drink recipe during Happy Hour. Here’s our favorites ready for you to mix up and enjoy this holiday season.

Week 1: Root Beer Float
To make this take on a soda fountain classic, mix three parts root beer with one-part RumChata. Frosted mugs are optional!

Week 2: Cinnamon Roll
We liked the RumChata so much, we brought it back in week 2. This time, we mixed one-part RumChata with three parts cream soda.

Week 3: Red Wine Floats
To change it up a bit, we switched to wine. For these delectable drinks, you need one pint Magnum Dark Chocolate Raspberry ice cream, 1/2 bottle of red wine, seltzer for serving and to make them extra fancy – chocolate sauce, for lining glasses. Start by rimming the insides of four glasses with chocolate sauce, then scoop in ice cream and pour in the red wine. Top off with seltzer before serving.

Week 4: Apple Cider Sangria
First step for this drink is grab a large glass pitcher. Then gather a Granny Smith apple (sliced), a Red Delicious apple (sliced), Golden Delicious apple (sliced), lemon (sliced) and an orange (sliced). Add that fruit to the pitcher and pour in two cups of apple cider, two bottles of ginger beer and a bottle of white wine. Stir and enjoy! Feel free to add some bite size pieces of all fruit in the bottom of each glass to really impress your guests.

Week 5: TGHR Holiday Spritzer
Break out the bubbly for the finale. Pour ¾ of a glass of champagne, then add equal parts pomegranate and cranberry juice. We like to make it extra fancy with fresh cranberries and pomegranate seeds in bottom of glass (added to the glass before champagne).

Cheers to the new year!

When is Sharing NOT Caring?  When it Comes to Sickness…

Greta Cline, CFO

It’s cold and flu season, which means germs and bacteria are EVERYWHERE.  It’s important to keep yourself healthy.  So how do you combat these germs?

  1. Clean your desk! According to studies, more than 10 million germs can be found on the average work desk, which is 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Totally gross, right? Use cleaning wipes to routinely wipe down your desk surface, phone, keyboard and mouse.  Do you have a co-worker out sick?  Wipe down their desk too!
  2. Sharing is NOT caring! The saying goes “sharing is caring”, but not when it comes to illness. If you are feeling sick, don’t share coffee mugs or food with others.
  3. Wash your hands! It’s the advice we have heard from parents and teachers hundreds of times over the years. But when washing your hands, make sure not to touch the soap dispenser.  In a article from Cosmopolitan Magazine, it states that the University of Arizona found that a a fourth of office soap dispensers are contaminated with fecal bacteria. You’ve been warned!
  4. Stay clear of the kitchen! The microwave, water cooler, and coffee pot handle could be plotting against you. Do you have to give up coffee?  We, at TGHR would not suggest such a thing, but give it a wipe or use a paper towel to pour your coffee.

We hope you stay healthy during this cold and flu season!  If you have an employee out with the flu, don’t stress and give us a call.  We can send a temp even if it’s just for one day.  We’ll supply the employee, you supply the cleaning wipes – teamwork!

Simple Summer Sides

June 26, 2019
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

Summer is the perfect time for cookouts with friends and family. We love a good BBQ at That’s Good HR.  Burgers, hot dogs or chicken on the grill just smells like summer! Here are two simple sides that will keep you smiling all summer.

Kirstia’s Famous Corn Dip

This “dip” is best served with Fritos Scoops, but tortillas chips work too. Carrots are a great option for the health-conscious, but despite their crunch they don’t measure up to the chip options.

Ingredients:

4 cans Fiesta Corn (drained) – must be Fiesta Corn, no substitutions

1 cup sour cream

1 cup mayo

2 cups Colby Jack cheese, shredded

2 tablespoons canned jalapenos (or more if you desire more heat)

Mix all the Fiesta Corn, sour cream and mayo together until well blended.  Add jalapenos with a little juice and continue to mix.  Next, add the cheese and mix more.  Once all ingredients are together, if the dip looks too wet, add a bit more cheese.  If it appears too dry, add equal parts mayo and sour cream. Trust us – it is delicious.

Fresh Squeezed Lemonade

What says summer more than lemonade? This recipe can be doubled, tripled or even quadrupled to your desired serving size.

Ingredients:

1 cup lemon juice (squeezing 4-6 makes about 1 cup)

1 cup sugar

6 cups water

To make 1 cup of lemon juice, you will need 4-6 lemons.  If you want to make more lemonade, just double the recipe – 8-12 lemons, 2 cups sugar and 12 cups water.  We promise it will taste like you’re strolling the midway at the State Fair.

Share with us what your favorite summer side dish is.  Bonus points for including a recipe!

We are thrilled to announce that That’s Good HR has earned ClearlyRated’s Best of Staffing® Client Award for providing superior service to our clients. That’s Good HR received scores of 9 or 10 out of 10 from 95.8 percent of clients, which was our highest NPS score to date.  This satisfaction percentage is also significantly higher than the industry’s average of 35 percent. Less than 2 percent of all staffing agencies in the U.S. and Canada have earned the Best of Staffing Award for service excellence. On average, clients of winning agencies are 2.2 times more likely to be completely satisfied with the services provided compared to those working with non-winning agencies. We can’t thank our clients enough.

One of the best things about participating in the annual survey, is we receive direct feedback from our clients.  This feedback validates the work that we do daily for our clients and candidates.  Here’s a sample of our feedback:

  • TGHR does a great job at providing quality candidates and our company has been able to retain the majority of those candidates!
  • That’s Good HR, Inc. has been a solid provider of candidates when we’ve needed additional support. They have a lovely team that is communicative and helpful, and they are very knowledgeable about their industry and location.
  • They really care about their clients and their candidates and it shows. I love working with That’s Good HR!
  • Always a good experience working with TGHR to fill either short or long-term staffing needs.
  • The staff is very responsive, helpful, friendly and enjoyable to work with.
  • Read more testimonials here.

The survey was conducted in December 2018 and was sent to all hiring managers and companies we had worked with in a three-month period.  The results are tabulated and were released in February 2019. The awards are presented by ClearlyRated in partnership with CareerBuilder. ClearlyRated (formerly known as Inavero) is an independent, international company that administers more staffing agency client and talent satisfaction surveys than any other firm in the world, reporting on more than 1.2 million satisfaction surveys from staffing agency clients and job seekers each year.

So, thanks. Thanks to our clients who let us help them find the best talent for their open positions.  We are grateful for your support and your feedback.  We share this honor with you!

How Staffing is Similar to Dating

Lindsey Curtis
February 11, 2019
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

February is the month we celebrate love and we love helping people find a job.  Daily our superstar recruiters play matchmaker to match candidates with jobs.  Often the first step is to talk with candidates to find out their interests much like you would chat with someone on your first date.  Then potential employees are “set-up” with our clients, just like you’d “set-up” two single friends on a date. So how else is staffing similar to dating?

Online is all the rage. Many singles use online apps to find that special someone just like we advertise on job boards like LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter to find special candidates.  See which jobs would make you swipe right on our job board.

Face-to-face is key.  One of the hallmarks of our recruiting process is meeting our candidates face-to-face.  This is so helpful when talking to our clients. Even if it is someone you have been talking to for weeks or even months, you still would want to meet face-to-face to continue your relationship.

Finding your type. When on the dating scene, you might go out with one person for bit, and then switch and start seeing someone new.  Working at a temporary position allows you to try out a position before fully committing to the relationship – or job.

Timing is everything.  Sometimes candidates need to wait or go on a few different interviews before finding the right job. Just like dating where you might have to wait until the right person comes along.

What everyBODY is saying.  Body language plays an important role in the hiring process.  According to study conducted by Career Builder hiring managers know within the first five minutes if candidate is a good fit – just like love at first sight.

Breaking up is hard to do.  Sometimes relationships and jobs just don’t work out.  And that’s ok.  The beauty of working with a staffing company is if you let us know with notice, we’ll work on finding you your next sweet gig.  Just like you’d lean on a friend after a breakup with your sweetheart, That’s Good HR will be there for you!

Do you need a Staffing Firm? Don’t take our word for it…

Why do businesses use temporary employees?  According to the American Staffing Association, flexibility, speed, and access to talent are the top benefits to working with a staffing agency like That’s Good HR.  Companies across the nation use staffing firms and it shows considering staffing employment hit an 11-year high in this month (January 2019).

It’s a candidate-driven market right now and many employers are finding it increasingly harder to find qualified candidates to fill open positions. As the BOSS Group’s blog points out, staffing agencies are the experts in finding qualified candidates.  You know what – we agree! That’s Good HR employs a multi-targeted, multi-channel approach in order to continuously reach qualified candidates.

BOSS Group is not the only resource that thinks using a staffing firm is a good idea.  The popular job board ZipRecruiter states that having the right staff is critical to a business’ success. Hiring a temporary employee gives a company the advantage of being able to “try before you buy”.  You can bring an employee onto your team and make sure they are a good fit before committing to them in for the long run.

Team People also recommends “test-driving” an employee before hiring.  They also point out that staffing companies have more resources to find high-level talent than most hiring managers do, which saves managers time and money.  Who doesn’t need that?

Our Intent

January 10, 2019
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

Annually as the new year approaches, many folks take time set their intentions for the next year. Making a new year’s resolution is common place on January 1, but 80 percent of resolutions fail by February. One thing you can do to help your resolution – or resolutions – stick is to share them with others who can help keep you accountable.

To prepare for the new year, the TGHR team engaged in a fun, crafty activity one day during a staff lunch. Using a kit bought online, each TGHR staff member came up with a word that sums up what they want out of the new year. We took the words and hammered them on to bracelets that can be worn as a reminder of our intention. It was great to share these words and the meaning behind them with the co-workers we see daily. We also documented our intentions on our office white board (well in our case our board is, of course, orange – our signature color), so we can help keep each other accountable.

What’s your word for 2019? Here are ours:
Mary – Breathe & Patience
Tiffany – Let Go
Amber – Grace & Serve
Lindsey – Cici & Sully
Kate – Be Present
Lana – Trust
Ashley – Thrive
Madison – Be Bold
Staci – Breathe
Greta – Patience
Kirstia – Strength
Susie – Grace
Meaghan – Faith over Fear
Emma – Rooted

We’re excited to get the new year underway. If getting a new job is one of your 2019 resolutions, give us a call – we’re ready to help you achieve that goal!

How to be a Good Partner

Tiffany Moore headshot.
Tiffany Moore
VP, Client Partnerships
December 3, 2018
FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

On a recent visit with one of my longtime clients, he asked me a question that I appreciate more than any other – “how can I as a hiring manager be a better partner to you?”. I truly value each one of my clients and do not look at the work I do daily as transactions.  I believe my relationships are partnerships that I value deeply. Client interactions are a two-way street where both parties benefit.  So, how can you help best?

First, time is of the essence in today’s job market.  Giving me feedback quickly will help secure the best candidates for your positions.  We have seen that candidates with accounting experience such as accounts receivable/payable move incredibly fast – as do most other positions as well.

Next, don’t be shy! Tell me the specific job skills and experiences you require (or do not) require for a potential employee after you review resumes. When we learn your specific preferences, it helps us to screen candidates more accurately before sending them for your review. Be honest as the more information you give, the better.

Then, once you have received resumes, it is best to schedule interviews within a day or two.  This ensures the candidates that you want are still available in this fast-paced, competitive job market.

Once a candidate interviews, one way we can be a good partner to you is by providing 360-degree feedback.  This could include how your company and employees presented themselves during the interview and the candidates overall impressions of your company.  This information can help you stay competitive with future employees.

In the end, That’s Good HR, Inc. has built our business in Indianapolis by creating client partnerships for 20 years. And I am proud to say that I am fortunate enough to be hitting my 11-year anniversary in January.  The amazing partnerships I have built over the last 11 years with clients like the one mentioned above is the reason I still love my job today!
